Chrysler 488 (8.0 L) Magnum V10The Chrysler/Dodge 488 Magnum is a 8.0 l (7,997 cc, 488.0 cu.in.) natural aspirated V10 90° four-stroke gasoline engine from Chrysler LA/Magnum-family. This engine was manufactured from 1994 up to 2003.

The Chrysler 488 Magnum features a cast-iron block and two cast-iron heads with a single camshaft (OHV) and two valves per cylinder (20 valves in total). The Chrysler 8.0 L Magnum engine is equipped with a multi-point fuel injection system and an electrical ignition system with two ignition coils pack and individual coil for each spark plug.

The compression ratio rating is 8.4:1. A 101.6 mm (4 in) cylinder bore and 98.6 mm (3.88 in) piston stroke give the 488 Magnum engine a total of 7,997 cc of displacement.

The 8.0 L engine produced from 305 PS (224 kW; 300 HP) at 4,100 rpm to 314 PS (231 kW; 310 HP) at 4,100 rpm of horsepower and 610 N·m (62.2 kg·m, 449.6 ft·lb) at 2,400 rpm of peak torque

The 8.0 L Magnum engine has a cast-iron block with a six-bearings crankshaft supported system. The cylinder bore is 101.6 mm (4.00 in), piston stroke is 98.6 mm (3.88 in) and the compression ratio rating is 8.4:1. This motor has aluminum alloy pistons with two compression and one oil control rings, forged steel connecting rods, and nodular iron crankshaft. The crankshaft main journal diameter is 76.2 mm (3.00 in) and the crankpin diameter is 53.0 mm (2.08 in).

Main bearing cap bolts tightening procedure and torque specs:

After securing bearing cap bolts, make sure crankshaft turns smoothly by hand.

Cylinder head

The cylinder heads are made of cats-iron. The engine has a single camshaft over-head valves. The camshaft is driven by a single timing chain. The intake valve head diameter is 48.8 mm (1.92 in), the duration is 246° the exhaust valve diameter is 41.2 mm (1.62 in), the duration is 265°. The Chrysler 488 Magnum engine is equipped with hydraulic valve tappets.

    • The Dodge V10 truck engine is very reliable engine. That is why you do not see many for sale. Everyone is hanging on to them. The V10 can match a diesel for towing cap at a lower maintain cost. By far the diesel will get better MPG. If you drive less than 12,000 miles per year. The gas engine is better than the diesel. If you travel above 5,000 feet ELV a lot. The V10 gas is a better engine. I own a Ford V10, Love it. I live at 5,300 feet. Owned diesels before.

      • My Ram with the cummins produces 385 hp and almost 1000 ft. pounds of torque. It also gets almost 20 mpg versus your 8 mpg! It will also outlast you gas engine by 200,000 miles. The only problem is the democrat regime attacking diesel fuel with their nazi epa regulations, driving up diesel fuel prices!

        • Apples to oranges. Is your Ram from the 1990’s? When it was released, the Ram V10 made 55 more horsepower and 55 more torque than the optional Cummins from the same year. Also, the V10 averaged 11mpg, not 8, so it’s clear you are exaggerating to reinforce your bias. You invalidated your own opinion. Good job. Still a far cry from the 17 or so the 12v Cummins got though.

          • V10 stock makes more power and torque than stock 12v.
            Can’t compare stock vs bolt on parts
            Can’t fix stupid…

    • I own a 1999 Ram 2500 4×4 extra cab. Have owned since 2000. Has 208,000 miles, still running smooth and strong. Keep up on oil changes. The weak link is the automatic trans. Keep tranny cool as possible. This is a low RPM engine, designed for towing. Not for gas mileage or racing. If needed for towing this is a very capable truck.
