Nissan L14

Nissan L14 engineThe Nissan / Datsun L14 is a carbureted 1.4 liter (1,428 cc, 87.14 cu in) straight-4, four-stroke cycle gasoline engine from Nissan L-family.

The Nissan L14 engine is a four-cylinder in-line unit equipped with a single overhead camshaft and fully balanced five bearing crankshaft. The valves are operated through rockers which are directly activated by the cam mechanism. The L14 engine has cast iron cylinder block and aluminum alloy cylinder head.

It has an 83 mm (3.27 in) cylinder bore and 66 mm (2.60 in) piston stroke with a compression ratio of 9.0:1. It produced from 85 PS (84 HP, 62 kW) at 6,000 rpm to 95 PS (94 HP, 70 kW) at 6,400 rpm of horsepower and from 116 Nm (11.8 kg·m, 85 lb·ft) at 3,600 rpm to 122 Nm (12.4 kg·m, 90 lb·ft) at 4,000 rpm of torque.

The breakdown of the engine code is as follows:

  • L – Engine Family
  • 14 – 1.4 Liter Displacement

Cylinder block

The L14 engine has a cast-iron cylinder block. The crankshaft is a special steel forging, with the center main bearing equipped with thrust washers to take up the end thrust of the crankshaft. The Nissan (Datsun) L14 engine cylinder bore is 83 mm (3.27 in) and the piston stroke is 66 mm (2.60 in).

The special aluminum pistons are of the strut construction to control thermal expansion and have two compression rings and one combined oil ring. The gudgeon pins have special hollow steel shafts and are a fully floating fit in the pistons and a press-fit in the connecting rods.

Cylinder head

The aluminum alloy cylinder head contains wedge-type combustion chambers and is fitted with aluminum bronze valve seats for the intake valves and heat resistant steel valve seats for the exhaust valves. Intake valves are 38.0 mm (1.53 in) in diameter and the exhaust valves are 33.0 mm (1.30). The L14 motor used the single type valve springs on intake valves and dual type valve springs on exhaust valves. The cast iron camshaft is driven by chain from the crankshaft pulley.

The engine is pressure-lubricated by a rotor type oil pump which draws oil through an oil strainer into the pump housing and then forces it through a full-flow oil filter into the main oil gallery.
