The Toyota 1PZ is a 3.5 l (3,469 cc, 211.69 cu-in) five cylinders, four-stroke cycle water-cooled naturally aspirated internal combustion diesel engine, manufactured by the Toyota Motor Corporation.
The Toyota 1PZ engine is a five-cylinder variant of the 1HZ engine and as such it shares many of its internals with that engine. The 1PZ engine has a cast-iron cylinder block with 94 mm (3.7 in) cylinder bores and a 100 mm (3.94 in) piston stroke. Compression ratio rating was 22.7:1.
This motor has a cast-iron cylinder head with a single overhead camshaft (SOHC) with two valves per cylinder and indirect injection design.
The Toyota 1PZ produced 116 PS (85 kW; 114 HP) at 4,000 rpm of maximum horsepower and 230 Nm (23.5 kg·m; 169.7 ft·lb) at 2,600 rpm of maximum torque.
The breakdown of the engine code is as follows:
- 1 – 1nd generation engine
- PZ – Engine family

Cylinder block
The cylinder block is made of cast iron. The crankshaft is supported by six bearings on the inside of the crankcase. The crankshaft bearings are made of aluminum alloy. The crankshaft is integrated with ten balance weights which are cast along with it for balance. Oil holes are built into the crankshaft for supplying oil to the connecting rods, bearings and etc. The crankshaft bearing cap is of ladder-frame construction and is incorporated into the crankcase.
Pistons are made of highly temperature-resistant aluminum alloy. The first compression ring is made of steel and the second compression ring is made of cast iron. The oil ring is made of steel.
The cylinder bore is 94 mm (3.7 in), piston stroke is 100 mm (3.94 in) and compression ratio rating is 22.7:1.

Cylinder head
The cylinder head is made of cast iron with a cross-flow type intake and exhaust layout. The combustion chambers are swirl chamber type. The camshaft journal part of the cylinder head has camshaft caps made of aluminum alloy and is made of cast iron on the cylinder head side. The camshaft is driven by the timing belt.
The 1PZ engine has OHV design with two valves per cylinder. Intake valves are 42.5 mm (1.6732 in) in diameter, and the exhaust valves are 36.0 mm (1.4173 in). Exhaust and intake valves are equipped with irregular pitch springs which are capable of following the valves even at high engine speeds. The 1PZ engine has a dual-type exhaust manifold.
Adjustment of the valve clearance is done by means of an outer shim type system, in which valve adjusting shims are located above the valve lifters.
