Cylinder block
The Toyota 1ZZ-FE has an aluminum “open deck” cylinder block with thin-walled cast-iron liners and five bearing support system. The liners are fused into the block and their special rough outer surface promotes strong connection. The Toyota 1ZZ has a 79.0 mm (3.11 in) cylinder bore and 91.5 mm (3.6 in) piston stroke. Compression ratio rating is 10.0:1.
The engine has a massive crankcase combining the crankshaft main bearing caps. A parting line extends along the axis of the crankshaft. Aluminum (light alloy) crankcase is made integrally with fused in steel main bearing caps and increases the rigidity of the cylinder block.
The engine is equipped with aluminum alloy pistons with two compression and single oil control ring. The pistons are connected to the rods with full floating pins. The connecting rod caps are mounted by bolts (without nuts).

Cylinder head
The cylinder head is made of aluminum alloy which gives it good cooling efficiency. The engine has dual overhead camshaft design with four valves per cylinder. The engine has a conical type combustion chamber. The camshaft is driven by the single roller chain (pitch 8 mm) with the outer hydraulic tensioner (equipped with a ratchet and preload spring) and lubrication nozzle.
The 1ZZ-FE used Variable Valve Timing with intelligence system (VVT-i) on the intake camshaft. Intake valves are 32.0 mm (1.2598 in) in diameter, and the exhaust valves are 27.5 mm (1.0827 in). The engine did not have hydraulic lifters, so special valve shims were used to adjust the valve clearance.
A bolt-on TRD supercharger kit is available on the 2003–2004 Toyota Corolla, Matrix, and Pontiac Vibe. The bolt-on TRD supercharger kit can also run on other vehicles, but with some custom fabrications.

Valve clearance adjustment data
Calculate the thickness of new adjusting valve lifter so valve clearance comes within specified values.
R = Thickness of removed valve lifter
N = Thickness of new valve lifter
M = Measured valve clearance
Intake:
N = R + [M – 0.20 mm (0.008 in)]
Exhaust:
N = R + [M – 0.30 mm (0.012 in)]
Valve lifters are available in 35 sizes to range from 5.06 mm (0.1992 in) to 5.74 mm (0.2259 in), in steps of 0.02 mm (0.0008 in).
Example (intake valve):
R = 5.10 mm
M = 0.52 mm
N = 5.10 + (0.52 – 0.20) = 5.42 mm.

What are the torque specs for the water pump for a 2007 Matrix XR 1.8 l [1zze] engine and torque for alternator bolts
Thanks
my fielder 2003 s model 1.8l has 320000km is consuming oil but no leakage and obvious smoke. mechanic was advising I change oil rings. does it work? if it does which are the recommended replacement parts? will they give me the value?
I’m in the middle of replacing rings on my celica 1zzfe. It should, because burning oil is from 2 things, worn rings and worn valve seals. I tore my engine apart and the lol rings were SHOT! I was surprised the rest of the engine looked pretty much ok. I honed the cylinders and put in new pistons and rings and bearings its spinning just fine and even made compression with the wood block I had it sitting on! So I’d say it probably helped. Just be prepared for a lot of work or paying somebody a lot of labor to do it.
Do you remove the full engine or just the head
Yes, change the rings ,actually they are overdue, for the parts check with the local dealers
Good bro page
Oil could be leaking into Coolant system. Check for oil in coolant inside of radiator turning coolant foamy. This Still ends up as a head job at the least.- Ray Stoddard
Check PCV
I have a 2005 Matrix that needed the engine replaced. I bought a 1ZZ-FE engine. When I went to install it, every thing fit perfect except one thing. Directly under the intake manifold there is, what appears to be, a cooling line. It comes out of the block, takes a 90 degree turn, goes horizontal for a bit, then goes down to the bottom of the engine and heads toward the radiator. This was NOT on the engine I removed. I have no where to connect this line. What do I do? If I knew what this connected to, I might be able to modify the piping.
I REPLACED MY 1ZZ ENGINE BUT THERE IS A PROBLEM WHICH THE CAR BEHAVESAS IF IT HAS AMISS. IT HAPPENS WHEN THE ENGINE IS COLD AND IT CLEARS AFTER ABOUT 5 MINUTES.ALSO BREAKING IS HARD.PLIZ HELP
I put my Corolla out of service for a few days once it hit 300k miles. Since I always used Mobil 1 in it the interior engine was clean. I removed the head and pan, popped out the pistons, honed the cyl walls, re ringed it and installed new crank and rod bearings. The fitment on everything was great. I opted with the TRD supercharger pump and man this little Corolla runs like a bat out of hell now. Chews up some more fuel but only when I am heavy footed. The thing is that I’m going to have to change the clutches and steels in the trans axle because the tranny with that many original miles on it is starting to get closer to rebuild time. 1.8 is a great engine. It’s not a big big power producer like an Sti Subaru but it’s plenty for a little Corolla. Surprises a lot of people with the supercharger when I blow their doors off. Haha
O
Thankyou very much for the information.
will a fuel injector for a 2007 toyota matrix work in a 2007 pontiac vibe? (both have the 1.8L 4cyl 1zz fe engine.)
It should. Just make sure to research the particular fuel injectors because GM might’ve modified them differently for the Vibe and the Matrix.
Can i replace the 1zz Fe engine with 1nz Fe engine in my Toyota Corolla Runx?
will a 2007 toyota matrix fuel injector work in a 2007 pontiac vibe. Both have a 1zz fe, 1.8l engine.

My corolla spacio 2003 model with a 1zz engine runs well but I have noticed a. Oil consumption and it has started smoking a bit so my question is do I need to change the rings or just to change the valve seals
Oil could be leaking into Coolant system. Check for oil in coolant inside of radiator turning coolant foamy. This Still ends up as a head job at the least.- Ray Stoddard
This isn’t entirely correct. The Mr2 spyder and celica GT are the 1zzfeD not the 1zzfe found in the rest of the applications the d had stronger internals.
Hi what are the dimensions of the oil seal front drive shaft (left) for toyota allion 1ZZFE
HELP needed please. I have a 1zzfe VVTI corolla. The timing intermittently advances and retards on its own . I can hear the slight knock with lowered performance at 1000 -3000rpm. Sometimes the power comes back and no knocking at all. I’ve cleaned the VVTI solenoid valve and filter. Engine is clean from inside the head also. What should i Check? Engine oil is changed on time 3500 – 5000 kms.
Thank you very much for the information really apreceated what been provided,it is very usefull to all the mechanics
