Toyota 4E-FE

Toyota 4E-FEThe Toyota 4E-FE is a 1.3 l (1,331 cc, 81.22 cu-in) straight-four 4-stroke natural aspirated gasoline engine from Toyota E-family. The Toyota 4E-FE engine was manufactured from 1989, and was discontinued after 1999.

The 4E-FE engine features a cast-iron block and aluminum cylinder head with dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) and four valves per cylinder (16 in total). Compression ratio rating is 9.6:1. It has a 74.0 mm (2.91 in) cylinder bore and 77.4 mm (3.05 in) piston stroke. The Toyota 4E-FE engine has electronic fuel injection system and ignition system with a distributor.

The engine produced from 75 PS (55 kW; 74 HP) at 5,400 rpm to 100 PS (74 kW; 99 HP) at 6,600 rpm of maximum horsepower and from 110 N·m (11.2 kg·m, 81.1 ft·lb) at 3,600 rpm to 117 N·m (11.9 kg·m, 86.2 ft·lb) at 4,000 rpm of peak torque.

During production, three generations of the 4E-FE engine were available. Engines differed mainly in a modified intake and exhaust manifolds and ECU, as a result, it had different output power and torque.

The breakdown of the engine code is as follows:

  • 4 – 4 generation engine
  • E – Engine family
  • F – Economy narrow-angle DOHC
  • E – Multi Point Fuel Injection

Valve clearance adjustment data

Calculate the thickness of new adjusting valve lifter so valve clearance comes within specified values.

R = Thickness of removed valve lifter
N = Thickness of new valve lifter
M = Measured valve clearance

Intake:
N = R + [M – 0.20 mm (0.008 in)]
Exhaust:
N = R + [M – 0.36 mm (0.014 in)]

Valve lifters are available in 17 sizes to range from 2.50 mm (0.098 in) to 3.30 mm (0.130 in), in steps of 0.05 mm (0.0020 in).

Example (intake valve):
R = 2.60 mm
M = 0.55 mm
N = 2.60 + (0.55 – 0.20) = 2.95 mm.
