Nissan HR15DE

Nissan HR15DE engineThe Nissan HR15DE is a 1.5 l (1,498 cc, 91.41 cu-in) straight-four four-stroke natural aspirated gasoline engine from Nissan HR-family. This is the same engine as the HR16DE, but it has a shorter piston stroke.

The Nissan HR15DE uses a lightweight aluminum block with the fully balanced five-bearings crankshaft and aluminum head with dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) and four valves per cylinder (16 valves in total). The engine is equipped with electronic throttle, multi-point fuel injection system, variable valve timing system (CVTC) on the intake camshaft and ignition system with individual ignition coil for each spark plug (NDIS, Nissan Direct Ignition System). After upgrading in 2006, the engine received two injectors per cylinder and higher maximum power and torque.

Cylinder bore and the piston stroke are 78.0 mm (3.07 in) and 78.4 mm (3.09 in), respectively. Compression ratio rating is 10.5:1 or 11.0:1 (depends on the year and car model).

The HR15DE engine produces from 99 PS (73 kW; 98 HP) at 6,000 rpm to 116 PS (85 kW; 114 HP) at 6,000 rpm of maximum horsepower and from 134 Nm (13.7 kg·m; 98.9 ft·lb) at 4,000 rpm to 156 Nm (15.9 kg·m; 115.1 ft·lb) at 3,600 rpm of maximum torque.

The breakdown of the engine code is as follows:

  • HR – Engine Family
  • 15 – 1.5 Liter Displacement
  • D – DOHC (Dual Overhead Camshafts)
  • E – Multi Point Fuel Injection

Cylinder block

The HR15DE has an aluminum cylinder block with five bearing support system. Cylinders are fitted at an offset to minimize friction arising from the angle of the connecting rod as a piston descends into the cylinder. The resulting smoother reciprocating motion of the pistons contributes to high power output and high torque as well as fuel economy. Also, the engine structure is designed so that the piston remains in the upper part of the cylinder longer than in a conventional engine. This permits more efficient use of combustion energy and effectively improves thermal efficiency.

The engine has cracking-processed connecting rods. These integrally cast connecting rods to offer lighter weight than conventional connecting rods, which are constructed in two parts, separated at the eye where they join the crankshaft. The cracking processed conrod is manufactured in one piece, then the lower connecting rod eye is broken in two (the cracking process) and, finally, the two parts are rejoined after mounting. Mating of the uneven surfaces created by the cracking process results in a very precise joint. The engine has two compression and single oil control ring.

The crankshaft and camshaft journals are finished with a polishing tape to produce a mirror-like finish. The result is a thorough reduction in friction on these bearing surfaces of key engine components.

Cylinder head

The cylinder head is made of an aluminum alloy, each camshaft is supported by five bearings. The HR15DE has variable valve timing system (CVTC) on the intake side. This system enables variable valve timing in response to engine rpm and throttle opening. Enhanced control and reduced system friction improve response and optimize torque characteristics.

The engine has a plastic intake manifold with an integrated tumble control valve. The HR15DE motor is equipped with EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system.

Valve clearance adjustment data

Calculate the thickness of new adjusting valve lifter so valve clearance comes within specified values.

R = Thickness of removed valve lifter
N = Thickness of new valve lifter
M = Measured valve clearance

Intake:
N = R + [M – 0.30 mm (0.012 in)]
Exhaust:
N = R + [M – 0.33 mm (0.013 in)]

Valve lifters are available in 26 sizes range from 3.00 mm (0.1181 in) to 3.50 mm (0.1378 in), in steps of 0.02 mm (0.0008 in).

Example (intake valve):
R = 3.10 mm
M = 0.52 mm
N = 3.10 + (0.52 – 0.30) = 3.32 mm, so we need a valve lifter with identification mark 332.

Cold Hot
Intake 0.26-0.34 mm (0.010-0.013 in) 0.304-0.416 mm (0.012-0.016 in)
Exhaust 0.29-0.37 mm (0.011-0.015 in) 0.308-0.432 mm (0.012-0.017 in)

  1. How do you tell apart the vehicle with dual injectors hr15de engines with different Hp and torque from one another. how do you know which is 114 hp from the one that is 110hp and 150 Nm toque from the one that is 148Nm.. where is it indicated in the engine?

    • According to the engine model, it is impossible to know its specs precisely, only by the vehicle model, and more precisely the decoding of the VIN can accurately determine your engine specifications.

      The table specifies horsepower and torque specifications that may be in this engine and perhaps this is not all possible options.

    • Is there any other fuel filter on the Nissan note e11 other than in the tank? My note jerks when the fuel qty is below half…and I replaced the pump and filter assy in tank already…any suggestions??

  2. hi, do you know the codes for the upstream and downstream o2 sensor. i looking at ordering it but not sure which one is it.

  3. Dear administrator, I have a Nissan tida 2010 with a HR 15 engine. Since the last four months or so I noticed that while descending a slope the car begins to pull back with a high compression and it slows down considerably. But however while asending a steep slope , the car will stall if gas pedal is not pressed vigorously.so I took the car to a technician who checked it and a code concerning tumble control valve was found. What does that mean ?.

    • i think it will fit but make sure you get the new one because hr15 the old one have a tick sound problems, or you can get hr18 if possible
