The Nissan VG30DETT is a 3.0 l (2,960 cc, 180.62 cu.in.) twin turbochargered V6 60° four-stroke gasoline engine from Nissan VG-family. The VG30DETT was manufactured since 1987 up to 2000. The engine was introduced in 1987 on Nissan MID4-II concept car.
The VG30DETT features cast-iron block and two aluminum heads with double overhead camshafts (DOHC) and four valves per cylinder (24 valves in total). The Nissan VG30DETT engine is equipped with multi-point fuel injection system (EGI); mechanically timed electrical ignition system; NVTCS (Nissan’s Valve Timing Control System) on intake camshafts and EGR system. It has hybrid twin T22/TB02 turbochargers with twin intercoolers.
Compression ratio rating is 8.5:1. Cylinder bore and the piston stroke are 87.0 mm (3.43 in) and 83.0 mm (3.27 in), respectively. It produces from 280 PS (206 kW; 276 HP) at 6,400 rpm to 330 PS (242 kW; 325 HP) at 6,800 rpm of horsepower and from 382 Nm (39.0 kg·m; 281.9 ft·lb) at 3,200 rpm to 388 Nm (39.6 kg·m; 286.3 ft·lb) at 3,600 rpm of maximum torque.

Cylinder head
The cylinder head is made of strong, light aluminum alloy which gives it good cooling efficiency. The has double over-head camshaft for each head and 4 valves per cylinder. The camshafts are driven by a single timing belt. The engine is equipped with NVTCS (Nissan’s Valve Timing Control System) system for intake cams.
The intake valve diameter is 34.0 mm (1.34 in), the exhaust valve diameter is 29.5 mm (1.16 in), the duration is 248° for both side. The VG30DETT is equipped with hydraulic valve lifters.

Please can you tell me whether, in the event of a cam belt failure,the engine is “safe”, ie, do the valves and pistons hit each other?
No, it will not be safe. Its an interference engine meaning not enough clearance to prevent catastrophe in the advent of timing belt failure.
