Nissan Y44 / Y44E

Nissan Y44EThe Nissan Y44 is a 4.4 l (4,414 cc; 269.3 cu-in) gasoline-fueled, four-stroke cycle, spark-ignition internal-combustion V8 automobile piston engine, manufactured by the Nissan Motor Company from 1974 to 1989.

The Y44 engine has OHV cylinder head design with 16 valves (2 per cylinder) and a 4-barrel carburetor. Since 1975 it has an electronically controlled fuel system and emission regulation technology, called NAPS (Nissan Anti Pollution System)*.

With an 8.6:1 compression ratio the power and torque outputs are 204.0 PS (200.0 hp, 150.0 kW) at 4,800 rpm of horsepower and 343 Nm (35.0 kg·m; 253.1 lbf·ft) at 3,200 rpm of torque. The Nissan Y44E has 338 Nm (34.5 kg·m, 252.0 lbf·ft) at 3,200 rpm of peak torque.

*NAPS (Nissan Anti Pollution System). The initial introduction of NAPS technology was the installation of an exhaust gas recirculation valve (EGR valve), followed with the addition of a catalytic converter and an air pump that added oxygen into the exhaust to promote higher temperatures in the catalytic converter, thus cleaning the exhaust further. The Y44E was the first NAPS engine.

The breakdown of the engine code is as follows:

  • Y – Engine Family
  • 44 – 4.4 Liter Displacement
  • E – Electronic Port Fuel Injection
