The Toyota 1HD-FTE is a 4.20 l (4,164 cc, 254.1 cu-in) six cylinders, four-stroke cycle water-cooled turbocharged internal combustion diesel engine, manufactured by the Toyota Motor Corporation.
The Toyota 1HD-FTE engine has a cast-iron block with 94 mm (3.7 in) cylinder bores and a 100 mm (3.94 in) piston stroke for a capacity of 4,164 cc (254.1 cu-in). Compression ratio rating is 18.8:1. The motor has a cast iron cylinder head with a single overhead camshaft (SOHC) with 24 valves which is mounted on a three-layer steel laminate type head gasket.
The 1HD-FTE engine is based on the 1HD-FT, but it has new valve seats, new pistons, an improved cooling system and an increased from 18.6:1 to 18.8:1 compression ratio. The 1HD-FTE engine is equipped with electronic rotary fuel injection pump; central vertically mounted injectors and Toyota CT26 turbocharger (for Toyota Land Cruiser 70- series) or Toyota CT20B turbocharger with intercooler (for Toyota Land Cruiser 100-series).
The Toyota 1HD-FTE produced 205 PS (151 kW; 202 HP) at 3,400 rpm of maximum horsepower and 430 Nm (43.9 kg·m; 317.3 ft·lb) at 3,200 rpm of maximum torque (for Toyota Land Cruiser 100-series with intercooler).
The breakdown of the engine code is as follows:
- 1 – 1nd generation engine
- HD – Engine family
- F – Economy narrow-angle
- T – Turbocharged
- E – Electronic fuel injection

Cylinder head
The 1HD-FTE has a one-piece high-strength cast iron cylinder head with single (SOHC) high-quality carbon steel camshaft and aluminum rocker arms. Each rocker uses bridges to actuate a pair of valves.
The camshaft is driven by a timing belt and gears. The timing gear train included a hydraulic auto tensioner. Furthermore, the timing gear train drove the oil pump, vacuum pump, steering gear pump, injection pump, and camshaft.
The engine has SOHC design with four valves per cylinder (24 valves in total): two intake and two exhaust valves, which are made of special heat-resistant steel. Intake valves are 33.0 mm (1.2992 in) in diameter, and the exhaust valves are 30.5 mm (1.2007 in). Intake duration is 216° and exhaust duration is 246°.
The 1HD-FTE engine has an aluminum intake manifold and cast iron exhaust manifold that was mounted on a five-layer steel laminate type exhaust manifold gasket. The engine is equipped with the EGR system.

what is the main difference between the 1hdfte engine in the 79 series and the 100 series isee they have a different turbo and the 100 series has an intercooler are the pumps and injectors the same
Very informative.Some questions answered.Thankyou.
Hi is there anyway of getting years produced info
agreed. interested in finding which years are coming available the most. – nelson wells, Athens, ga
As duas mangueiras ou tubos que saiam da caixa de velocidade vão ligar em que peça do motor toyota hdj100?
what is the turbo part number of 1HD FTE engine year 2003
does the 4.2 engine use the same oil filter as the 4.0 gas engine
Nice information guys keep it up coz you are really helping a lot of people worldwide.
Nice information guys keep it up coz you are really helping us to know better about our vehicles
Very descriptive and detailed article; extremely informative.
Thank you. Nice info
I love the breakdown of everything but I am not finding the amount these diesels can tow or if they can tow a camper at all?
