Toyota 1JZ-FSE

Toyota 1JZ-FSEThe Toyota 1JZ-FSE is a 2.5 liter (2,492 cc, 152.07 cu-in) straight-six, four-stroke cycle natural aspirated gasoline engine from the Toyota JZ-family. The engine was manufactured by the Toyota Motor Corporation on the Tahara Plant (Tahara, Aichi, Japan) from 1999 to 2007.

The Toyota 1JZ-FSE engine features a cast-iron block, aluminum cylinder head with dual belt-driven overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder (24 in total). The 1JZ-FSE is equipped with Toyota D4 direct injection system, VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing with intelligence). Bore and stroke are 86.0 mm (3.39 in) and 71.5 mm (2.81 in), respectively. Compression ratio rating is 11:1.

The 1JZ-FSE engine used the same block as the 1JZ-GE, however, the design of the cylinder head is unique. The 1JZ D4 has a relatively narrow-angle cylinder head with swirl control valves that serve to improve combustion efficiency. This engine produced 200 PS (147 kW; 197 HP) at 6,000 rpm of maximum horsepower and 250 Nm (25.6 kg·m; 185.24 ft·lb) at 4,000 rpm of peak torque.

The breakdown of the engine code is as follows:

  • 1 – 1-st generation engine
  • JZ – Engine family
  • F – Economy narrow-angle DOHC
  • S – Gasoline direct injection system (D-4)
  • E – Multi-Point Fuel Injection

Cylinder block

The Toyota 1JZ-FSE engine has a cast-iron cylinder block, bore is 86.0 mm (3.39 in) and stroke is 71.5 mm (2.81 in). The cylinder block, a monoblock specially cast structure, employs the seven bearing support system. The crankshaft has seven journals and twelve counterweights; both pins and journals were induction-hardened.

The pistons are special aluminum casting. Each piston is fitted with two compression rings and a single oil ring. Compression ratio rating is 11:1.

Cylinder head

The cylinder head is made of a light, strong aluminum alloy with good cooling efficiency. Camshafts are made of specially cast steel and are driven by timing belt. The Toyota 1JZ engines are not equipped with hydraulic lifters, so special valve shims are used to adjust the valve clearance.

Valve clearance adjustment data

Calculate the thickness of new adjusting valve lifter so valve clearance comes within specified values.

R = Thickness of removed valve lifter
N = Thickness of new valve lifter
M = Measured valve clearance

Intake:
N = R + [M – 0.20 mm (0.008 in)]
Exhaust:
N = R + [M – 0.30 mm (0.012 in)]

Valve lifters are available in 35 sizes to range from 5.06 mm (0.1992 in) to 5.74 mm (0.2260 in), in steps of 0.02 mm (0.0008 in).

Example (intake valve):
R = 5.12 mm
M = 0.40 mm
N = 5.12 + (0.40 – 0.20) = 5.72 mm, so we need a valve shim with thickness of 5.72 mm (Mark 72) (0.2252 in).

    ???It’s good but it could be better if you’ll list the Engine types but parallel with the Vehicles that are mostly using such engine.

  2. My 1jz engine D4 is giving me problem in the morning it’s failing to start until I start twice that’s when it’s start. In short it’s misbehaving when it’s Cold in the morning. I changed spark plugs and I used super two iridium Denso. What could the problem,?
