Toyota 1JZ-GTE

Toyota 1JZ-GTEThe Toyota 1JZ-GTE is a 2.5 liter (2,492 cc, 152.07 cu-in) straight-six, four-stroke cycle turbocharged gasoline engine from the Toyota JZ-family. The engine was manufactured by the Toyota Motor Corporation on the Tahara Plant (Tahara, Aichi, Japan) from 1990 to 2007.

The Toyota 1JZ-GTE engine features a cast-iron block, aluminum cylinder head with dual belt-driven overhead camshafts (DOHC) and four valves per cylinder (24 in total). The 1JZ-GTE is equipped with an electronic fuel injection system, VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing with intelligence) since 1996, ACIS variable-length intake manifold.

The bore and stroke are the same as for the 1JZ-GE: cylinder bore is 86 mm (3.39 in) and piston stroke 71.5 mm (2.81 in), but this engine has a lot of different parts. In addition, the Yamaha Motor company took a great part in the development of this engine.

The first generation of the Toyota 1JZ-GTE had a compression ratio rating of 8.5:1, twin CT12A turbochargers arranged in parallel and blowing through a side-mount or front mount intercooler and was manufactured from 1990 to 1995. This version produced 280 PS (206 kW; 276.2 HP) at 6,200 rpm of maximum horsepower and 363 Nm (37.0 kg·m; 267.9 ft·lb) at 4,800 rpm of peak torque.

The second generation had increased compression ratio rating of 9.0:1, VVT-i system on the inlet camshaft, ETCS system or ETCS-i (for Toyota Chaser JZX110 and Toyota Crown JZS171). This engine belonged to the BEAMS (Breakthrough Engine with Advanced Mechanism System) family of Toyota engines. The engine received a reworked head, modified water jackets for improved cylinder cooling, newly shims with a titanium nitride coating and single CT15B turbocharger. Second generation 1JZ-GTE engine produced 280 PS (206 kW; 276.2 HP) at 6,200 rpm of horsepower and 378 Nm (38.6 kg·m; 279 ft·lb) at 2,400 rpm of maximum torque.

The breakdown of the engine code is as follows:

  • 1 – 1-st generation engine
  • JZ – Engine family
  • G – Performance wide-angle DOHC
  • T – Turobchagered
  • E – Multi-Point Fuel Injection

Cylinder block

The Toyota 1JZ-GTE engine has a cast-iron cylinder block, bore is 86.0 mm (3.39 in) and stroke is 71.5 mm (2.81 in). The cylinder block, a monoblock specially cast structure, employs the seven bearing support system. The crankshaft has seven journals and twelve counterweights; both pins and journals were induction-hardened.

The pistons are special aluminum casting. Each piston is fitted with two compression rings and a single oil ring. Compression ratio rating for the first generation of 1JZ-GTE without VVT-i system is 8.5:1, for the second generation (BEAMS) with VVT-i, is 9.0:1.

Cylinder head

The cylinder head is made of a light, strong aluminum alloy with good cooling efficiency. Camshafts are made of specially cast steel and are driven by the timing belt. The first generation 1JZ-GTE has the intake valves with 224° of duration, valve lift is 7.69 mm (0.30 in) and the exhaust valve duration is 228°, valve lift is 7.95 mm (0.31 in). The second generation of 1JZ-GTE is equipped with VVT-i system.

The Toyota 1JZ engines are not equipped with hydraulic lifters, so special valve shims are used to adjust the valve clearance.

Valve clearance adjustment data

Calculate the thickness of new adjusting valve lifter so valve clearance comes within specified values.

R = Thickness of removed valve lifter
N = Thickness of new valve lifter
M = Measured valve clearance

Intake:
N = R + [M – 0.20 mm (0.008 in)]
Exhaust:
N = R + [M – 0.30 mm (0.012 in)]

Valve lifters are available in 17 sizes range from 2.50 mm (0.0984 in) to 3.30 mm (0.1181 in), in steps of 0.05 mm (0.0020 in).

Example (intake valve):
R = 2.90 mm
M = 0.40 mm
N = 2.90 + (0.40 – 0.20) = 3.10 mm, so we need a valve shim with thickness of 3.10 mm (0.1220 in).
