Toyota 2EThe Toyota 2E is a 1.3 l (1,296 cc, 79.09 cu·in) straight-four 4-stroke natural aspirated gasoline engine from Toyota E-family. The 2E engine was manufactured from 1985 to 1998.

The 2E engine features a cast-iron block and aluminum cylinder head with the single overhead camshaft (SOHC) and three valves per cylinder (12 in total).

Compression ratio rating is 9.5:1. It has a 73.0 mm (2.87 in) cylinder bore and 77.4 mm (3.05 in) piston stroke.

The engine was available in the following versions:

  • 2E or 2E-L, 2E-LU It is a carburetored version of this engine. Horsepower ranged from 65.3 PS (48 kW; 64.4 HP) at 6000 rpm to 83 PS (61 kW; 81.8 HP) at 6,000 rpm with 89 N·m (9.1 kg·m, 65.6 ft·lb) at 3,600 rpm to 98 N·m (10 kg·m, 72.2 ft·lb) at 5,200 rpm of peak torque.
  • 2E-E, 2E-ELU – EFI version was used on Toyota Starlet Si (Ri) Limited.
  • 2E-TE, 2E-TELU – turbocharged version was used on Toyota Starlet 1300 Turbo S (Turbo R). This version was produced from 102 PS (75 KW; 100 HP) to 110 PS (81 KW; 109 HP)
  • 2E-LJ – this version was used on Toyota Starlet Van (3-rd generation). Thie version was produced 73 PS (54 kW; 72 HP) at 6,000 rpm of horsepower and 101 Nm (10.3 kg⋅m; 75 lb⋅ft) at 4,000 rpm of torque.

Cylinder head

The cylinder head is made of aluminum alloy which gives it good cooling efficiency. The engine has single overhead camshaft, that is driven by a timing belt and three valves per cylinder (12 valves in total). The 2E engine used special valve shims to adjust the valve clearance.

  9. Has anyone encountered water seeping into the fuel mixture? Fouling the engine performance. There is water by-pass hose to the carburetor, with the water/coolant entering through the intake manifold. Can this be eliminated?
