Toyota 2NZ-FE

Toyota 2NZ-FEThe Toyota 2NZ-FE is a 1.3 l (1,298 cc, 79.21 cu-in) straight-four 4-stroke natural aspirated gasoline engine from Toyota NZ-family. The 2NZ-FE engine was manufactured on Kamigo Plant (Aichi Prefecture, Japan) from 1999.

The 2NZ-FE engine features a lightweight aluminum block and aluminum cylinder head with dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) and four valves per cylinder (16 in total). Compression ratio rating is 10.5:1. It has a 75.0 mm (2.95 in) cylinder bore and 73.5 mm (2.89 in) piston stroke. The Toyota 2NZ-FE engine has electronic fuel injection system, VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing with intelligence) system on the intake side, ETCS-i (Electronic Throttle Control System-intelligent) and DIS-4 ignition system with individual ignition coil for each spark plug.

The 2NZ-FE engine was redesigned in 2003 due to the introduction of Euro IV emissions regulations. The following changes were made to the engine:

  • Piston shape was changed;
  • The shape of the exhaust manifold was modified;
  • Construction of the three-way catalytic converter was changed;
  • Three-way catalytic converter was fitted;
  • The 16 tit ECU was changed to 32 bit.

The engine produced 85.7 PS (63 kW; 84.5 HP) at 6,000 rpm of maximum horsepower and 121 Nm (12.34 kg·m; 89.3 ft·lb) at 4,400 rpm of peak torque.

The breakdown of the engine code is as follows:

  • 2 – 2-nd generation engine
  • NZ – Engine family
  • F – Economy narrow-angle DOHC
  • E – Multi Point Fuel Injection

Cylinder block

The Toyota 2NZ-FE has an aluminum cylinder block with five bearing support system and thin-walled cast iron liners. It has a 75.0 mm (2.95 in) cylinder bore and 73.5 mm (2.89 in) piston stroke. The engine has a crankshaft with four balance weights and an integrated crankshaft position sensor.

The steel connecting rods for the 2NZ-FE engine has caps that are held by plastic region tightening bolts. The engine is equipped with aluminum alloy pistons, semi-floating type piston pins and low-tension rings (two compression and single oil control ring).

Cylinder head

The cylinder head is made of aluminum alloy which gives it good cooling efficiency. The engine has dual overhead camshafts, that are driven by a roller timing chain which has an 8.0 mm pitch and four valves per cylinder (16 valves in total). The timing chain is lubricated by engine oil from an oil jet. The engine has a pentroof type combustion chamber and cross-flow manifolds.

The 2NZ-FE used Variable Valve Timing with intelligence system (VVT-i) on the intake camshaft. Intake valves are 30.5 mm (1.20 in) in diameter, and the exhaust valves are 25.5 mm (1.00 in). The engine has an intake duration of 225 degrees and exhaust duration of 216 degrees. The 2NZ engine used special valve shims to adjust the valve clearance.

Valve clearance adjustment data

Calculate the thickness of new adjusting valve lifter so valve clearance comes within specified values.

R = Thickness of removed valve lifter
N = Thickness of new valve lifter
M = Measured valve clearance

Intake:
N = R + [M – 0.20 mm (0.008 in)]
Exhaust:
N = R + [M – 0.30 mm (0.012 in)]

Valve lifters are available in 35 sizes to range from 5.06 mm (0.1992 in) to 5.74 mm (0.2259 in), in steps of 0.02 mm (0.0008 in).

Example (intake valve):
R = 5.10 mm
M = 0.52 mm
N = 5.10 + (0.52 – 0.20) = 5.42 mm.

    • A wonderful site.
      What are the correct injector specs for Toyota Corolla any NZE 120-R, 2NZ FE 1.3 engine manual 2005 make?

  1. Since from.few days I was searching 2NZ-FE engine specifications. Now I found at your site. That amazing. Can u plz share with me Parts attachment or illustrated parts catalogue ? All maintenance manual? Bcoz I need to know for how long we can use this engine? I mean engine life ? How many hours spark plugs life or lump sum by km? There is many thing I need to know. Waiting for your kind words.

    • Well, what can I say … The engine lives about 200,000 km, only the replacement is farther, it is not repairable. I, unfortunately, do not have a spare parts catalog, but I will look for a manual. I do not remember if I had a version in English. The spark plug lifetime is about 20,000 km.

  2. Hi there, would you know where the vehicles speed sensor is located please?. I presume it’s around the transmission somewhere?.

        • I sell all the engines especially 1SZ,2SZ,1NR,2NR,1NZ,2NZat Ladipo, Lagos, Nigeria

  3. Hello all. I want to know if there are any one who installed the LPG system for this engine.
    I have an Vios 2014 with 2nzef and recently I have installed an LPG system (LandiRenzo) with 2mm injector nozzle but for low engine speed the motor is not well.

  4. We just import most of the cars as second hand and they don’t come with user manuals. Worse enough the manuals are mostly found in Japanese language. Your website has valuable information and this will definitely help in taking good care of the car. Thanks a lot.
