Toyota 2TR-FE

Toyota 2TR-FEThe Toyota 2TR-FE is a 2.7 L (2,693 cc, 164.34 cu·in) straight-four 4-stroke natural aspirated gasoline engine from Toyota TR-family. The 2TR-FE engine was manufactured in Kamigo Plant and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia.

The 2TR-FE engine features a cast iron, deep-skirt cylinder block and aluminum cylinder head with two overhead camshafts (DOHC) and four valves per cylinder (16 in total). The Toyota 2TR-FE engine used Multipoint fuel injection system, VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing with intelligence) or dual VVT-i since 2015 and distributorless DIS (Direct Ignition System)- with individual ignition coil for each spark plug.

Compression ratio rating is 9:6:1 for VTT-i version and 10.2:1 for dual VVT-i. The cylinder bore is 95.0 mm (3.74 in) and the piston stroke is 95.0 mm (3.74 in). The 2TR-FE engine produced from 151 PS (111 kW; 149 HP) at 4,800 rpm to 163 PS (120 kW; 161 HP) at 5,200 rpm to of maximum horsepower and from 241 Nm (24.6 kg·m; 177.9 ft·lb) at 3,800 rpm to 246 N·m (25.1 kg·m, 181.3 ft·lb) at 3,900 rpm of peak torque.

The breakdown of the engine code is as follows:

  • 2 – 2-nd generation engine
  • TR – Engine family
  • F – Economy narrow-angle DOHC
  • E – Multi-Point Fuel Injection

Cylinder block

The 2TR-FE has a cast iron, deep-skirt cylinder block. A 95.0 mm (3.74 in) cylinder bore and 95.0 mm (3.74 in) piston stroke give the 2TR-FE engine a total of 2693 cc of displacement. Compression ratio rating is 9.6:1 or 10.2:1. The 2TR-FE is equipped with twin counter-rotating balance shafts within the crankcase to cancel the secondary inertia forces.

The 2TR-FE engine used a fully-balanced crankshaft with roll-finished pin and journal fillets. To reduce noise, vibration, and harshness, the crankshaft pulley used a torsional rubber damper. The high strength connecting rods has plastic-region tightening big-end bolts. The engine is equipped with aluminum alloy pistons with two compression and single oil control ring. The top compression ring has a Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) coating for wear resistance and the second piston ring is chrome plated.

Cylinder head

The cylinder head is made of aluminum alloy which gives it good cooling efficiency. The engine has dual overhead camshaft design with four valves per cylinder. The camshafts are hollow and driven by a roller chain, which is lubricated by an oil jet.

The 2TR-FE engine has four valves per cylinder – two intakes and two exhaust. The valves are actuated by roller rocker arms which has built-in needle bearings to reduce friction between the cams and roller rocker arms. The engine is equipped with the hydraulic lash adjusters with are maintained constant zero valve clearance.

The 2TR-FE used Variable Valve Timing with intelligence system (VVT-i) on the intake camshaft. The 2TR-FE received updates in 2015 to feature Dual VVT-i for both intake and exhaust sides.

  1. Wonderful technical details! very informative and eye-opening to vehicle owner

Where can i buy 2TR for my Toyota Prado 120

  2. Hi jemal. I have visited many websites and all had the torque specs at 49Nm. U justgave me a huge fright, because i am about to assemble my engine. Never done the job before, i am depending on this info. So please, are you absolutely sure????

    • From service repair manual for Toyota Tacoma 2000-2008 – Step 1: 39 Nm, 398 kgf*cm, 29 ft.*lbf. Jamal was absolutely right, I fixed my mistake.

  3. I am seeing conflicting info on oil capacity for the 2TR-FE 2.7L4 cylinder in my 2020 Tacoma.

    Is is 6.2qts or 5.5qts?

    • Official capacity is 6.2 quarts but I believe that is dry fill (new or rebuilt engine) which means about 1/2 quart remains inside engine during oil changes. My experience says 5.5 quarts to full mark on oil & filter change.
      Is 2TR-FE an interference engine?

  4. Hi
Is there a popular problem in the 2tr vvti 2.7 engines cases a fuel injectors disorder?
A fuel leakage problem happened with me twice in two different sets of injectors.

  5. Hi
Is there a popular problem in the 2tr vvti 2.7 engines cases a fuel injectors disorder?
A fuel leakage problem happened with me twice in two different sets of injectors.
And this problem causes a delay on starting the engine , and backfired sound ( sometimes) .

  6. can anybody tell me if i have to remove the timing case for hidn’t bolts or studs before i can remove the head on a 2TR-FE
